When I first read this of Op-Ed piece in the New York Times I thought the guy was smoking crack. A $.50 a gallon tax on gasoline! That's absolutely insane. Especially consider the $2 a gallon prices going on right now.
However, Gregg extirpated makes some points that show there would be a logic to this $.50 madness. That an increase in the federal gasoline tax could actually spur economic growth, while decreasing road congestion and automotive deaths.
Of course the increase would be phased in, we wouldn't wake up Tuesday morning and be hit with the new tax. But still, it would be pretty steep. Maybe the benefits would be helpful - but $.50 - wow!
I don't know. It gave me something new to think about today.
