Read The Goon

the goonLast week, in addition to my regular stash, I picked up two additional comics to take along with me on my trip to Las Vegas for the NAA convention. I got Queen & Country #25, a special double-sized issue of a series that I really enjoy but am not buying monthly right now - opting to wait for the collected trade paperbacks.

The other book I picked up was Eric Powell's The Goon #7. I had been reading a lot of good things about this comic and wanted to try it out. The Goon is a bit hard to describe. It stars a classic 1930's style bruiser named the Goon, and he lives in a world populated with all sorts of monsters and such. Some good and some bad. The premise of the ongoing book is that a zombie priest has come to town and is trying to raise a zombie gang to run the city. The Goon, obviously, is there to stand in his way with the help of his sidekick Franky. Talking spiders, zombie henchmen, and pork chops valued and trafficked like cocaine are just some of the weirdness in this book. Franky is a pretty trippy character too.

What made #7 even more appealing was that it featured a crossover with Hellboy with art from Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. I'm a big fan of Mignola's art and Hellboy.

Needless to say I didn't get a chance to read The Goon while in Vegas, but did get to read it earlier this week. I found the book to be a blast. Great entertainment. A little bit of horror, a little action, and a lot of just off-the-wall weirdness that really tickled my funny bone. This is a great comic. Not only do I want to re-read issue #7, but I want to delve into some of the trade paperbacks already available for The Goon.

The Goon is good reading. Ask me and I'll lend you issue #7 to find out for yourself.
