I just read that comic artist Jerry Robinson died in his sleep last night.
Robinson was responsible for many of the visuals for the early Batman comics. Bob Kane may have had the ideas and took most (okay, all) of the credit for a long time, but it was Jerry Robinson and writer Bill Finger who really gave the character his shape and dimension in those early years.
Robinson co-created Robin and created the Joker. Not sure where the Batman mythos would be today without those characters and their distinctive looks.
What I didn't know about Robinson until I started reading the reports of his passing was the work he did to spearhead comic creator rights or his involvement in helping free jailed cartoonists in foreign country.
The comic industry has lost a creative and impassioned leader.
The DC Comics blog has posted a short memorial about Robinson's passing the includes a number of covers from the Batman comics he worked on. Head on over to enjoy just a taste of the influential work this artist produced.
